I recently took this bag to Kenya and used it as my daybag to hike Mt. Kenya. I also used it as my carry-on and my daybag when I had a day layover in Cairo. It was awesome. It has a lot of space for packing multiple layers (for varying degrees of cold and rain), a comfortable hip belt and the must-have sternum strap. Also the back is made of comfortable foam - so it fits really nicely. I also like that the hip belt is tuck-away so that when I wasn't using the belt (aka hiking), I was able to put it away in order to keep it neat.

There is a slip pocket in the main body that I used for my magazines when I used the bag as my carry-on, but on the mountain I put my water bladder in there and it was perfect. (The bag doesn't have a hydration port - I just made one.) This bag is also cool because it has the two main compartments. The front one is great for smaller items and I used the zippered pocket and organization in there throughout my trip.

All-in-all a great bag. And the color I have (ochre) is AWESOME!

this is the 3rd back pack I have purchased, one for each of my sons before going off to college. they love the space for their laptop as well as plenty of room for everything else. Much more comfortable than their old backpacks

Comments about Eagle Creek Afar Backpack:

I am a college student who wears a back pack most of the day, and who commutes on a bicycle. This back accommodates useful volume of stuff (computer plus 3 textbooks) without becoming too bulky. I only have one minor gripe and it is regarding pockets for small things. I carry various non-valuable items like mini purell bottles and a folding toothbrush and it would be nice to have a small external pocket for these so that I wouldn't have to open the main compartments (which have lockable zippers) to access them. Overall, the bag is well-made, comfortable, and suits my needs.

Made the mistake of buying this bag. AS I WRITE I'm in a SECOND stitch shop to buy zippers, thread, and needles to stitch the poor zipper quality up. I've had to do this twice so far (the first time was in my 2nd week traveling. pack is WEAK. Yeah there's a money back guarantee but that is of NO use when ur in the middle of the world w no mailing address. DO NOT waste ur $! Get a solid pack . The marketing is great but since when do those people travel?? I fell for it... Don't you do the same! Loved my k-pak and traveled/lived europe/ afrika with it for 2 years w/o problems.

Comments about Eagle Creek Afar Backpack:

A laptop daypack that does not look like one at first glance – perfect for travelling the world, a big volume of 34 liters + lightweight - perfect for IATA guidelines - seems to be the ideal daypack for travelling, but: I always try to keep a low profile when travelling and avoid flashy gear which attracks unwanted attention. That's the reason why I don't like the black-red design and would appreciate you did at least the black afar in the classic eagle-creek-colours black and grey and avoid any bright colours which make the backpack look too flashy and an attractive target. Other features I miss: a rain cover, zipper-pockets on the hip belt, a padded hip belt, a h20-port, addtitional side straps at the side mesh pockets and above all a lockable laptop compartment. With these changes the afar would be the ideal daypack for me and I would buy it right away.

Comments about Eagle Creek Afar Backpack:

I purchased this pack in Ochre for car-camping, day hikes, and overnight trips. I really really like the Ochre, it stands out and although it is not a "pretty" color it is very appealing. It is very comfortable to wear. The compartments are well-thought out, and the mesh section outside the smaller front pocket is very useful. I use the Pack-It Cubes & Sacs to help make the most of my room, but it is very roomy on its own!

Comments about Eagle Creek Afar Backpack:

You have mis-named this Afar pack; it should be called the AHA! pack. I use this pack for day hikes although a metrosexual, digital-friendly computer commuter will find this pack close to perfection.

Here are this pack's greatest traits: velvet-like zippers, clean design with no loose straps, forgiving shoulder straps, outstanding comfort. I am a compulsive gear person (super picky), and I give this pack an A+.

The only improvement I have made is to attach padded shoulder straps to the hip belt so it can carry a good load without strap pressure on my hips.

Eagle Creek, you all are truly magical. Your products are intelligent, thoughtful, and at the highest level of creativity and pragmatism. Thank you for your consistent excellence.

Comments about Eagle Creek Afar Backpack:

A rather great-looking, well-designed multi-use/flexible pack! The ocher colorway is awesome! It can almost become a technical panel-loading ultralight multi-day pack. The external compartment at the back can be used to hold a DIY frame such as a cardboard or an earth pad.

In the next version, I hope to see these eight sensible and simple features for the Afar pack to be considerably technical:

                (1) Rain cover (well, it can be bought separately).
                (2) Longer side compression straps (to hold external materials like sleeping mat, or to allow the straps to attach to the opposite side buckles).
                (3) Additional compression side straps at the level of the side mesh pockets.
                (4) The attachment point (buckle) of the vertical strap of the large front mesh pocket should be higher (up to the pack's handle at the top), not below the zippers of the compartments).
                (5) Mesh pockets for the hip/waist belts
                (6) The hip belt should attach closer to the vertical axis of the pack, not to the sides of the pack to allow waist and hip movement.
                (7) Higher location of the adjustment point of the shoulder belt straps, so one can pull tight or loosen the straps comfortably from the level of the chest.
And finally, (8) use of more mesh/advanced material for the internal et al compartments to further decrease the weight of the pack w/o sacrificing durability/comfort.

Can it go full-on technical? I hope so. I just love its weight and design.

Comments about Eagle Creek Afar Backpack:

I purchased this for a trip to Maui and Moloka'i. I have several other Eagle Creek luggage items, but wanted to really go light this time. After comparing literally dozens of different day packs from various vendors, I went with Eagle Creek (again!) and this new offering. Using it in combination with the Specter sacks, I have packed everything I need for two weeks with room to spare. (Well, my EC fanny pack is going along, too.) Despite racking my brain for something missing or a way to improve the product, I can't think of ANYTHING. Kudos to the design team on this one. You knocked it out of the park! P.S. This is the first bag I've owned with a dedicated laptop compartment and I really appreciate that feature. I can get my ThinkPad out for TSA screening without disturbing the rest of the pack. P.P.S. As the other reviewer stated, the Ochre color rocks!
