I recently took this bag to Kenya and used it as my daybag to hike Mt. Kenya. I also used it as my carry-on and my daybag when I had a day layover in Cairo. It was awesome. It has a lot of space for packing multiple layers (for varying degrees of cold and rain), a comfortable hip belt and the must-have sternum strap. Also the back is made of comfortable foam - so it fits really nicely. I also like that the hip belt is tuck-away so that when I wasn't using the belt (aka hiking), I was able to put it away in order to keep it neat.

There is a slip pocket in the main body that I used for my magazines when I used the bag as my carry-on, but on the mountain I put my water bladder in there and it was perfect. (The bag doesn't have a hydration port - I just made one.) This bag is also cool because it has the two main compartments. The front one is great for smaller items and I used the zippered pocket and organization in there throughout my trip.

All-in-all a great bag. And the color I have (ochre) is AWESOME!

I purchased this Bag on a trip in Germany in June and On a recent commute a hole had developed near the top of the bag, by the zip (where the two pieces of material joins.)
The bag was only 32 days old.

Eagle Creek are only taking responsibility for the repair of the bag and not the delivery costs. Even if this is a clear manufacturing defect.

Overall I quite like the bag, particularly the size, number of pockets as well as weight of the bag. However I still disappointed with the Quality Control with the manufacturing of the bag.

Comments about Eagle Creek Afar Backpack:

I'm able to get a great deal of stuff in this bag, especially books. The hidden pocket for my computer is great and I like that it has two pouches for water bottles. The outside pocket works well for my gym clothes. I'm glad I decided on this backpack

Comments about Eagle Creek Afar Backpack:

I backpacked around the world with an Eagle Creek backpack and have had (and still do) several of their purses. However, with this pack the quality has gone downhill. The fabric is too thin and the plastic clips are small and cheap. I doubt this pack with withstand a lot of travel. Too bad since it is a fabulous design with a lot of pocket.

Comments about Eagle Creek Afar Backpack:

It's an average all around bag but the seams are wearing a bit form limited use with soft material while bigger to some European manufacturers but the Eagle Creek quality falls by a lot. You shouldn't have to feel you have to duct tape the seams to keep them engaged

Great for international travel to carry computing tools and overnight clothing with sweater on outside mesh pocket.

Make women's version and make it an inch and a half shorter. This pack is made for men's.

Would love to see one in deep red.

I really like ths product.Everything that your reviews spoke about is right on.My only complaint is the notebook compartment. Every time I need to access my computer when I go to the zipper I have to make sure that the shoulder straps are moved from the area,I'm still not used to that.

Comments about Eagle Creek Afar Backpack:

I use this as my school/work backpack. The hip and sternum belts are FANTASTIC. The hip belt hugely reduces the load on your back and shoulders, and the sternum belt keeps the pack firmly attached to your body reducing pressure on the lower back. I bought this pack because I have chronic back pain, and my old backpack was exacerbating the problem with poor weight distribution and no hip belt. With this pack, I have improved comfort and reduced back pain! I only wish it had more pockets/organizers since I am using it for school and work. For other purposes that might not be a problem.
