I recently took this bag to Kenya and used it as my daybag to hike Mt. Kenya. I also used it as my carry-on and my daybag when I had a day layover in Cairo. It was awesome. It has a lot of space for packing multiple layers (for varying degrees of cold and rain), a comfortable hip belt and the must-have sternum strap. Also the back is made of comfortable foam - so it fits really nicely. I also like that the hip belt is tuck-away so that when I wasn't using the belt (aka hiking), I was able to put it away in order to keep it neat.

There is a slip pocket in the main body that I used for my magazines when I used the bag as my carry-on, but on the mountain I put my water bladder in there and it was perfect. (The bag doesn't have a hydration port - I just made one.) This bag is also cool because it has the two main compartments. The front one is great for smaller items and I used the zippered pocket and organization in there throughout my trip.

All-in-all a great bag. And the color I have (ochre) is AWESOME!

I am small, 5'1" 115 lbs and the shoulder straps are placed too far apart for my smallish back. Using the sternum strap made it very usable, but it is less than ideal. Never quite got the comfort/fit level I hoped for. The main compartment zippers are lockable, but ironically, there is no way to lock the lap top compartment. This is a foolish oversight.
The hip belt is too flimsy to do what it should, shift weight from the back to the hips. The lack of a rigid frame of any kind exacerbates this problem.
I used it as an all purpose day pack for 2 months in New Zealand. It was fine for typical travel, but I also used it for numerous three day hikes in the mountains and it was not suited for that purpose due to the lack of frame and flimsy hip belt. I did it, but it was not comfortable and slowed me down.
Worst of all, the pack is not the highest quality. One of the elastic bands on the shoulder strap is 2 stitches away from falling off and I never even used it. One of the mesh bottle holders is shredding and will not last more than one more trip. Yes, I used it alot, but still, this was just one 2 month trip. I am going to test the warranty promised for this product regarding those two defects. I certainly hope EC honors their committments.

Comments about Eagle Creek Afar Backpack:

I use this bag for school, work and travel. Just got back from a week in Europe. The bag is light, comfortable and durable. I'm petite however, and felt that the straps are alittle big. Overall I love this bag and would recommend it to anyone for business or personal use.

Comments about Eagle Creek Afar Backpack:

I call my Eagle Creek Afar, the OTG (On-The-Go) backpack. I can stuff all the things I need for work (laptop, iPad, peripherals, folders, etc.) or for those weekends away from home without compromising on anything. The main comp hold my clothes, toiletries & vidcam. The organizer is where my Magellan & extra batteries are. And the zippered mesh is where I put my meds & vits. The exterior front mesh pocket holds my 3-in-1 jacket & a rain cover. It's a very convenient bag to carry as long as you know how to pack it right!
Of course it's how you care for your bag that will spell the difference. Just don't over-stuff it with items that wasn't meant for the bag to carry. And regardless of your height or weight, the EG is for everyone. All of my family uses it & I've also recommended it to friends.
I've no complaints about my Afar or any of the EG bags I own. You see before I buy anything, I look at the General Description, the Specs and look at the overall reviews (the Pros & Cons) of the consumers. It's NOW my choice to buy the bag or not. Of course, this is my opinion & I hope whoever reads it would respect it!

Comments about Eagle Creek Afar Backpack:

I purchased this Bag on a trip in Germany in June and On a recent commute a hole had developed near the top of the bag, by the zip (where the two pieces of material joins.)
The bag was only 32 days old.

Eagle Creek are only taking responsibility for the repair of the bag and not the delivery costs. Even if this is a clear manufacturing defect.

Overall I quite like the bag, particularly the size, number of pockets as well as weight of the bag. However I still disappointed with the Quality Control with the manufacturing of the bag.

Comments about Eagle Creek Afar Backpack:

Used this pack for camera bag and travel documents all around Europe, Turkey and Greece. Was very good as carry on and general travel hauling pack but does have some short comings in my view. Laptop compartment is great size however zipper could be a little larger and either have a cover flap or seam sealed for rain. Interior pocket in laptop compartment would benefit by adding either a full length velcro closer or zipper and a little larger. The front smaller zipper closed pocket is good but the two interior pockets could be deeper and have one larger than the other with a zipper closer for security, pen slots could be on the outside of the larger pocket. (These two pockets are fine for phones etc but sunglasses case or glassed case does not fit very well) Small exterior zippered pocket on the outside of the bag would be a benefit for iPod, ear buds etc. Generally like the product but would be great with some changes and I would buy a replacement and recycle current pack.
