Over-all a good value, replacing my old PacSafe backpack which handled small items better but was too small and too difficult to get into.

Love the new design. It is NOT 'all ways secure' The laptop compartment is secure when wearing the backpack as the straps are in front of the zipper but it does not have a locking zipper (some zippers have the small holes in the zipper that are designed to put a lock through-- not sure what the official name so I will call them locking zippers). This is a no-go for me as I like to lock my laptop during long flights to Africa so I can feel a little more comfortable when I want to put my bag above me to sleep on flights over 12 hours. This has been a reoccurring problem with Eagle Creek as most of the backpacks have some locking zippers but not all of the zippers are locking zippers. I was looking to replace my EC Conor flashpoint backpack that has a locking zipper on the laptop compartment BUT not the main compartment. EC just needs to use locking zippers on all the compartments - I would gladly pay the extra money to get a backpack I can completely lock up. I loved the look of this bag but since I can't lock the laptop compartment, it is being returned.

Great Travel Backpack

By Anna

from California

Pros

  • Enough pockets
  • Good Features
  • Lightweight
  • Nice Design
  • Roomy

Cons

  • Sternum Strap Adjustability
  • Zipper on laptop pocket

Best Uses

  • Traveling

Comments about Eagle Creek Tan Grey/Olive Green Afar Backpack:

Used this on a trip. Was able to pack a lot of things inside the backpack. The laptop pocket was a great place to put travel documents. I stuffed my hats in the front stretch pocket. Loved the back slip panel and the tuckaway waist belt.
CONS: The sternum strap couldn't be adjusted higher. The highest point went to the lowest part of my sternum, and that is uncomfortable for women. I didn't use the sternum straps, but my arms kept hitting against them, so that was also uncomfortable. Also, the zipper for the laptop pocket was hard to zip.

Versatile, well-made backpack - glad I bought it

Comments about Eagle Creek Tan Grey/Olive Green Afar Backpack:

I bought this backpack (in black) for travel as well as in town adventures with a toddler w/ lots of stuff, and also for hiking in the mountains. I need a pack that is comfortable for long days and practical in all weather. This pack works well for urban adventures and holds its shape better than my top loading day-hiking backpack with all of its shock cord (that catches on things when traveling). The Afar pack is functional and versatile; stuff is easy to access. While I don't really need the computer sleeve (good to detox from electronics during hikes/travel), the padded sleeve does securely hold a 15" MacBook Pro and has the added advantage of creating a storage area for stuff that can benefit from being protected from impact when sliding in/out under airline seats, etc. - its also a good place for travel papers, magazines, items that like to lay flat, etc. I like that the Afar has locking compartments and an rfid protected area; wish the computer sleeve could be locked as well. CONS: I wish that the sternum strap could be adjusted upward at least another inch. The waist strap/hip belt could be more substantial, but at least it is there - nothing worse than walking all day with a load hanging off shoulders. I am small-framed and at first I was concerned about fit of sternum straps, but I gave the pack a chance and it fit better when fully loaded than when trying on empty. Prior to purchase I did a lot of research, and this pack was the only one that had travel and security features as well as practical features for the trail - covered, durable, easy-gliding zippers; reinforced bottom; and exterior mesh pockets on three sides. The plastic quick release buckles seem a little minimalist compared to what I am used to, but they can easily be replaced if they fail.

Comments about Eagle Creek Tan Grey/Olive Green Afar Backpack:

Will use for travel, wish you could hide the straps, have more protection at the bottom. Does not have too many unnecessary pockets like many other backpacks. Have not tested, but seems durable.

Great complimenting piece

Comments about Eagle Creek Tan Grey/Olive Green Afar Backpack:

Purchased this backpack in the tan/olive to compliment the 26" Afar wheeled duffle for a trip to Ireland. It was large enough to handle all of my carry-on's for the flight. The side pockets handled the water bottles that we brought along. Did find that it could use some extra pockets for smaller items but other than that it was great. Love the fact that all of my Eagle Creek pieces match so it makes it easier keeping them together. Compared to other backpacks of equivalent size and quality I think this one was a bit pricey but since it has a lifetime guarantee it might end up being worth the extra cost.

Comments about Eagle Creek Tan Grey/Olive Green Afar Backpack:

Haven't used this yet but it looks solid in structure, very functional with all the pockets, lightweight and comes in three colors. I chose the beige to go with my rose gold hartmann carry-on hardside luggage.
