One of the main reasons I bought this bag was to avoid baggage fees while flying. I am pretty tough on my luggage and hate paying extra money (student budget). I have never once had to check the bag before going through security.
I love the seperation between the two bags...it allows me to use the backpack for school and use the whole piece as a travel item. The compression straps are great and allow you to fit a lot more items in there than you might think.
Just recently used this on a 2 week in Europe and it did a great job, the wheels are durable and even the extendohandle (which at times feels a little flimsy) had no issues what so ever. At least for people like me the price may be a put off, however if you think about cost of use over the lifetime of the product its a great bargain.
I have had this bag for over a year now, and while it has a few cosmetic hits (again rough on my bags), it still handles and holds up like a champ.
I would recommend this to anyone who travels on a regular basis...if you are not traveling all that much than you can get by with something cheaper...but these bags are a lot like Tom Bihn (the companies might be related) you buy them once and you don't buy another bag unless you want to.

I love the Eagle Creek brand and the service behind each product. I recently bought and additional bag to replace my old Continental One that I have used for over 20 years: It's the Switchback 22". It does everything it promises to do, but it has some lines that takes getting used to. The main compartment holds the internal structures for the handle bars, so it takes up quite a bit of space. I suggest using the three tube cubes to fit right in between these bars to utilize the space better.
The additional bag has a nice capacity and is easily detachable.
This bag has handles everywhere and lots of straps that can get in the way
Overall, a great bag with awesome versatility.

Tips: Use the regular cubes and tube cubes for maximum use of space. It organizes all your stuff very quickly.
After a lot of research, I got a great price at Oregon Mountain Community website with free shipping.

I purchased my 22 in. switchback (roller bag with zip-off backpack) back in 1996. I have used it constantly all over the world, and it is still my favorite piece of luggage. As we speak I have it in my room here in Hwambo, Angola. I recommended it to a friend who works for World Bank and she used hers constantly for many years. When my roller wheel broke after more than 10 years, I sent it to Eagle Creek and had it back in perfect condition within two weeks. The luggage is of course awesome, but what made me write the review was the quick and easy warranty. We traveled the world with these bags for 4+ years, and they held up great. A spring wore out in one of the handles and a wheel got scrapped up and it made a clicking noise on hard surfaces. I took the parts off, sent them in and within 10 days had brand new replacement parts that worked perfectly! Now we are ready for more adventures with them!

Absolutely love this bag. Perfect size, perfect for international carry-on (main bag overhead, detachable dayback under seat). Bag is actually pretty comfortable as a backpack as well. Only gripe: the side pockets on the daypack are not expandable/elastic and too small to fit most water bottles.

This bag has gone everywhere, from an overnight stay (where many an outfit change was required - shoes are the death of any packing light intentions) to a three-week trip to Europe or Asia. Just returned from a one week trip to Spain and decided to take another piece of luggage. That was a total mistake. With every flight of stairs and every necessary taxi trip just to get the suitcase to the train station or airport, I longed for the ease and versatility of my switchback 22. You don't know what you're missing till you have to do without, and this latest trip without has made me realize that the switchback 22 isn't just a superior piece of luggage, it's a superior piece of travel sanity. I did have another Eagle Creek product with me on this trip to Spain (the ORV Take 2) but its largess made things difficult for navigating. I will say it held up extremely well for all of the abuse it took and being able to zip off the gear bag allowed me to store this in the overhead luggage areas on trains, rather than the end of the aisle and out of sight. Amazing bag - just much more bag than i needed for this particular journey. I much prefer the versatility of the smaller Switchback 22. Another note on quality: since I have rarely had to check the 22 (I think twice
out of two dozen or so airline trips) it is in fantastic shape. The ORV Take 2 looked like it had been dragged on asphalt, tarred and feathered, after just the one trip. I wiped off all the debris and dirt, and aside from some scratches, it's good as new. I will never buy any other luggage than Eagle Creek!

I bought this pack in 2000 and still have it. I remember debating about it because it was more expensive than other bags and I didn't have much money at the time. But boy, I owe that salesman a hug because this bag has been awesome. Other than being a little dirty from travels, it is in perfect condition. Its been to Peru, India, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia and more. It has been convenient in some situations to be able to use it as a backpack like on the back of a motorbike! But it also looks perfectly stylish and is expandable. I cannot say more good things about Eagle Creek and their products. This company is awesome. I have absolutely no regrets.

My wife and I have used two of these bags for two month long trips to Europe in the past 12 months. They are very functional and durable. Every time I think that they are full, I can squeeze in another purchase. My only negative is that the pen, passport part of the day pack is inaccessible when the daypack is zipped to the main bag. As a result, we tended to not use the two bags zipped together.

When I went shopping for new luggage this was a little more than I wanted to pay but this bag seemed to be just what I wanted so I bit the bullet and bought it.

I am so happy I did, what a great piece of luggage this is; Light durable and very well thought out. I LOVE the detachable backpack feature, it came in so handy as I was tooling around the UK. There's not one feature missing! And how can you go wrong with an unconditional repair guarantee? I expect that this bag will be traveling with me for years to come and an item that seemed, at first a tad on the pricey side is actually money very well spent!

For many years my Switchback 22 traveled throughout the U.S. and Great Britain. It was my faithful companion. Then, unfortunately, it became ill and some of its screws fell out. Its wheels also became cracked and some chunks fell out. I emailed Eagle Creek, carefully packed my trusty companion and sent it to the Eagle Creek Hospital. Alas, while it was there, the gravity of the illness increased. I received an email stating that it could not be returned to its original condition; so, it would be replaced by a brand new bag! I was asked to go to the website and select the bag and color that most closely resembled the original one. I found the Switchback Max 22 to be the one the came closest. \"Lo and Behold\" today, a brand new happy Switchback Max 22 was delivered. It\'s perfect and much more than I expected. I just can\'t believe it! Eagle Creek, you are fantastic! You honored your warranty with no questions asked. WOW! THANKS!
