Great bag! This was a no-brainer for me, as I love Eagle Creek. My bigger, check size bag is the FlipSwitch and it's terrific. So when I wanted a new carry-on, I chose the Tarmac and I love it. Lightweight, lots of capacity and very sturdy and durable. I am a travel writer and travel and write for a living, so having the right gear is of utmost importance. You can't go wrong with this bag!

The wheels on my bag disintegrated. Eagle Creek's website has some replacement parts and nice videos for how to replace wheels on most models. Unfortunately, the wheels for this model were not listed. It took several go-rounds with their customer service to find the right wheels. This concluded when I sent the wrong ones back and included the disintegrated wheels. They sent the proper ones afterwards. See photo. The head guy was apologetic and claimed he had never heard about the wheels needing to be replaced on their products. See Photo.

Good news: It took ten minutes to replace them, thanks to the video posted on their website for a similar product. My much less expensive REI bag, the one with more miles and a much lower price tag, served me well during these events.

Bad news: Cost $ and took a long time to get the right wheels. Their website still doesn't list correct replacement part.

Comments about Eagle Creek Tarmac Carry-On:

Several things I like about this purchase:
      - was able to expand capacity to come home, had not expected to add more stuff but had to at last minute and it was packed and heavy.
-pull handle is nice and sturdy, fits the briefcase thing i also bought so i did not have to 'carry' anything when not on the plane.
-exterior pockets were very useful and easy to get to.
-I never check a bag, even though i never fly Economy class. This bag fit easily in allotted storage overhead. Might have been tight when fully packed back there in steerage.

Comments about Eagle Creek Tarmac Carry-On:

I like Eagle Creek and will first say that this is a good bag. There are some design issues with it and a few quirks that one will need to get used to.

First off, I have had the bag for 3 weeks and just got back from my first trip with it. I was on a small plane so they made me check the bag for the first leg of my trip. When I got the bag back from the baggage claim, one male end of one buckles meant to cinch the bag down had broken. Disappointing for a brand new bag. I get that they are trying to save weight and every oz counts but they should put hardier buckles on this thing. Knowing how bags get manhandled, one of the people unloading the plane probably used the strap as a handle which caused it to brake. They just seem a bit delicate.

Another thing, compared to the Travelpro I have had for the better part of 9 years, the bag looks pretty scratched up after one trip. I am sure I won't notice it after a while but figured it was worth mentioning.

As for the things that will take some getting used to, there are only two that come to mind.

First, the way the bag expands is a bit strange but seems to work well. It took some getting used to when packing it for the first time but collapses nicely when you don't have a lot of stuff.

Second, the flap/lid/whatever you want to call it, for the main compartment is a bit floppy. It wasn't noticeable when I was picking out the bag but I decided to put some carry on liquids, a pair of shoes, and some miscellaneous items in the large outer pocket (it is the one where they say you can put an iPad and laptop). With some weight in that pocket, the thing looses any rigidity it may have had. Again nothing serious, it will just take some getting used to.

As for the broken buckle, we will see how it goes in terms of getting a replacement. Some may thing that I am a complainer and I get that the part is only $1.99 BUT the bag is 3 weeks old. It would be nice to here, oh I'm sorry it broke, here we will send the part ASAP. Not, sorry you can buy a replacement online which got me thinking, Is this going to be a regular thing? How many will I need to buy considering this happened the first time I used it? What if they change the buckle design? Should I order a bunch of them to have just in case?

Comments about Eagle Creek Tarmac Carry-On:

I've been using Eagle Creek bags since my first trip to Europe as a backpacking college student in 1994, and this is my first disappointment with Eagle Creek. I also own the previous model of Tarmac 22", but my husband has taken it as his own so I needed a new one.

The bag is ok, I guess, but the rounded corners on the top cut the capacity dramatically, and make it hard to fit an EC packing cube up there. Plus the corners make it a little harder to pack for me.

The cargo net is cool but you have to choose if you want to use it inside or out because you can't order another one. This would be nice when your daughter adds her blanket and teddy bear to your bag as your disembarking a cruise, or like regular people to hold a neck pillow.

They've also somehow changed the placement of the front feet because if I put another bag on top (as they are designed to do--using the EC Adventure Wheeled Tote or EC Adventure weekender), it makes this one fall over. I can NEVER leave the stacked bags standing or they topple. That might be my biggest pet peeve!

I've noticed the zippers sticking like others have also, plus it only expands around the top now, not all the way around.

I'm currently searching for another bag because this one is just useless to me. I cringe every time I have to pack this bag.

Comments about Eagle Creek Tarmac Carry-On:

I've been using a 20" suitcase from Rick Steves for the last umpteen years. It's still in good working order but I wanted something a tiny bit bigger and with easier access to the contents. The Tarmac 22 fits the bill nicely and is, if anything, better made than my old suitcase. The mesh divider in the lid accepts Eagle Creek's garment bag ... it's a bit tight, but it fits. I almost never travel with a suit or sport jacket but for those times when I must, this'll be a huge help.

We travel a lot, frequently internationally, and we always go carry-on even for a 3-4 week stay. The bag is new and only used on one 5-day trip so far, but was great. Seems small, but somehow holds a lot. I like the quality and numerous extra thought that went into its design (see the video). I reserved a star because I don't yet know how it will hold up over time. Stay tuned. :)

Comments about Eagle Creek Tarmac Carry-On:

I bought my Eagle Creek Tarmac 22 through Skymiles Marketplace last November and received in December 2014. I use this bag as a carryon for my frequent business travel. In less than a year the outside compartment interior lining of the bag has come apart at the seam. I have called E/C customer support and they have said that I need to send the bag to one of their service centers for repair or replacement and it takes up to a month to get the bag back! I fly at least two trips per month and cannot afford to be without this bag for a month. This bag should not have come apart in this short period of time and I think it is clear that there is a defect in the workmanship of the bag. Looking at the other reviews there is another customer that complained that their bag came apart at the seam –so it seems that there is a problem with some of this model of bag. I have spoken with customer support and left a message with their repair supervisor – Jose – but have not heard back from him as of yet. I also sent an email with pictures to customer service and warranty with no reply. Perhaps I will get some type of response by posting this review. If not for the interior seam coming apart the bag is ok.
