Great bag! This was a no-brainer for me, as I love Eagle Creek. My bigger, check size bag is the FlipSwitch and it's terrific. So when I wanted a new carry-on, I chose the Tarmac and I love it. Lightweight, lots of capacity and very sturdy and durable. I am a travel writer and travel and write for a living, so having the right gear is of utmost importance. You can't go wrong with this bag!

The wheels on my bag disintegrated. Eagle Creek's website has some replacement parts and nice videos for how to replace wheels on most models. Unfortunately, the wheels for this model were not listed. It took several go-rounds with their customer service to find the right wheels. This concluded when I sent the wrong ones back and included the disintegrated wheels. They sent the proper ones afterwards. See photo. The head guy was apologetic and claimed he had never heard about the wheels needing to be replaced on their products. See Photo.

Good news: It took ten minutes to replace them, thanks to the video posted on their website for a similar product. My much less expensive REI bag, the one with more miles and a much lower price tag, served me well during these events.

Bad news: Cost $ and took a long time to get the right wheels. Their website still doesn't list correct replacement part.

Over 100 countries carrying, but now that the world is more paved, got a EC roller several years and many trips ago. While abusing it again coming back from Iceland, I said I must review this bag - brilliant design. My model is no longer made but seems the new ones are possibly even better. Good to go!

Comments about Eagle Creek Tarmac Carry-On:

Pack-it system works exceptionally well for me. This bag is tailored for this system. It's flexibility is terrific; I can use the same bag for a couple of days or a business week. I particularly love the coat strap and ability to stack my Eagle Creek computer bag on top. Its light-wight and large capacity are also strengths. My Tarmac 28" proved to be a true road-warrior bag - hundreds of flights, fully loaded, without a failure. I have dropped Tumi for Eagle Creek and do not plan on going back.

Took on a river cruise so experienced several transfers. However, the versatility of the smaller bag was great. Decided to check it instead of carrying onboard on the way back, and it came through with no mars or scars. Contents safe and intact.
Will be the most-used bag in my future due to its size and durability, I'm sure! For both short and long international travel.

This bag is great for the 3-5 day trip when I need multiple outfits during the week (but not a lot of shoes). I travel weekly and after almost a year the bag is still like new. The external pockets are great size for quick access and the firm back with soft expandable front make it practical for almost any < 5 day trip. My only recommendation for change was if the retractable handle were mounted on the outside of the bag allowing for a flat surface inside.

Great bag, clearly within carry-on limits of most domestic airlines so you don't get burned at the gate. Design allows you to stow a lot in the bag, Going to try it for a week in Cayman with mask and fins in addition to clothes.

Several things I like about this purchase:
                    - was able to expand capacity to come home, had not expected to add more stuff but had to at last minute and it was packed and heavy.
-pull handle is nice and sturdy, fits the briefcase thing i also bought so i did not have to 'carry' anything when not on the plane.
-exterior pockets were very useful and easy to get to.
-I never check a bag, even though i never fly Economy class. This bag fit easily in allotted storage overhead. Might have been tight when fully packed back there in steerage.

Comments about Eagle Creek Tarmac Carry-On:

I like Eagle Creek and will first say that this is a good bag. There are some design issues with it and a few quirks that one will need to get used to.

First off, I have had the bag for 3 weeks and just got back from my first trip with it. I was on a small plane so they made me check the bag for the first leg of my trip. When I got the bag back from the baggage claim, one male end of one buckles meant to cinch the bag down had broken. Disappointing for a brand new bag. I get that they are trying to save weight and every oz counts but they should put hardier buckles on this thing. Knowing how bags get manhandled, one of the people unloading the plane probably used the strap as a handle which caused it to brake. They just seem a bit delicate.

Another thing, compared to the Travelpro I have had for the better part of 9 years, the bag looks pretty scratched up after one trip. I am sure I won't notice it after a while but figured it was worth mentioning.

As for the things that will take some getting used to, there are only two that come to mind.

First, the way the bag expands is a bit strange but seems to work well. It took some getting used to when packing it for the first time but collapses nicely when you don't have a lot of stuff.

Second, the flap/lid/whatever you want to call it, for the main compartment is a bit floppy. It wasn't noticeable when I was picking out the bag but I decided to put some carry on liquids, a pair of shoes, and some miscellaneous items in the large outer pocket (it is the one where they say you can put an iPad and laptop). With some weight in that pocket, the thing looses any rigidity it may have had. Again nothing serious, it will just take some getting used to.

As for the broken buckle, we will see how it goes in terms of getting a replacement. Some may thing that I am a complainer and I get that the part is only $1.99 BUT the bag is 3 weeks old. It would be nice to here, oh I'm sorry it broke, here we will send the part ASAP. Not, sorry you can buy a replacement online which got me thinking, Is this going to be a regular thing? How many will I need to buy considering this happened the first time I used it? What if they change the buckle design? Should I order a bunch of them to have just in case?
